Friday Sermon | Sola Scriptura

Today we’ll be watching a lecture provided by Chris Rosebrough of Pirate Christian Radio and Pastor at Kongsvinger Lutheran Church. The lecture took place on October 30, 2015 at the “Road to Reformation” Seminar in Grand Forks, ND. The video comes to us via Worldview Everlasting (WEtv).

Traditions of old can certainly be valuable. The writings of the early Church Fathers are also very valuable. However, both tradition and the writings of theologians are ‘trumped’ by the Word of God. In other words, when we confess the ‘Word Alone’ we are not confessing that we should reject everything of old from the Christian church, but rather that the traditions of the past and the things of the present are subjugated to the Word of God. The Word of God has the last say and is our source for doctrine, practice, and life

In the following lecture, Pastor Rosebrough does an overview of “The Word Alone,” as well as shows its practical application in the church today.

Friday Sermon | “Loved by God” by Alistair Begg

2011-alistair-begg

Due to my failure to track my own calendar, I was unable to post a Friday Sermon this past week. I tried sharing this sermon link via Twitter, so those of you who follow me via Twitter probably got to listen to the sermon. Today, I’d like to share the evening service preached by Alistair Begg at Parkside Church.

Paul wrote to encourage the church in Thessalonica with the conviction that God works powerfully through His Word and His Church to further the Gospel. Alistair Begg reminds us that genuine conversion always results in radical change. When Christians display transformed lives and proclaim the Word that we have received wherever God has placed us, the Gospel advances to the glory of God.

Sermon Text

The text for the sermon is Titus 2:11 – 3:11. Since the chapters are so short, we’ll include them below for greater context.

1 Thessalonians 1 (ESV)

Greeting

Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy,
To the church of the Thessalonians in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ:
Grace to you and peace.

The Thessalonians’ Faith and Example

We give thanks to God always for all of you, constantly[a] mentioning you in our prayers, remembering before our God and Father your work of faith and labor of love and steadfastness of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ. For we know,brothers[b] loved by God, that he has chosen you, because our gospel came to you not only in word, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and with full conviction. You know what kind of men we proved to be among you for your sake. And you became imitators of us and of the Lord, for you received the word in much affliction, with the joy of the Holy Spirit, so that you became an example to all the believers in Macedonia and in Achaia. For not only has the word of the Lord sounded forth from you in Macedonia and Achaia, but your faith in God has gone forth everywhere, so that we need not say anything. For they themselves report concerning us the kind of reception we had among you, and how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God, 10 andto wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, Jesus who delivers us from the wrath to come.

May the Grace and Peace of God be with you always,
In Christ Jesus,
Jorge

Friday Sermon | “Preaching God’s Grace” by Alistair Begg

2011-alistair-beggToday, I’d like to share a radio broadcast (part of a lecture series) by Alistair Begg entitled “Preaching God’s Grace“. In this segment, Alistair Begg encourages Pastors to Preach the Grace of God to their congregations and to do so clearly, avoiding certain pitfalls.

Clearly communicating the Gospel is a challenging assignment. It’s tempting to manipulate with guilt or to water down the truth to make it more attractive. But how do we motivate people to respond from the basis of God’s grace? That’s our subject on Truth For Life with Alistair Begg!

Sermon Text

The text for the sermon is Titus 2:11 – 3:11. Since the chapters are so short, we’ll include them below for greater context.

Titus 2-3 (ESV)

Teach Sound Doctrine

But as for you, teach what accords with sound doctrine. Older men are to be sober-minded, dignified, self-controlled, sound in faith, in love, and in steadfastness. Older women likewise are to be reverent in behavior, not slanderers or slaves to much wine. They are to teach what is good, and so train the young women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled, pure, working at home, kind, and submissive to their own husbands,that the word of God may not be reviled. Likewise, urge the younger men to be self-controlled. Show yourself in all respects to be a model of good works, and in your teaching show integrity, dignity, and sound speech that cannot be condemned, so that an opponent may be put to shame, having nothing evil to say about us. Bondservants are to be submissive to their own masters in everything; they are to be well-pleasing, not argumentative, 10 not pilfering,but showing all good faith, so that in everything they may adorn the doctrine of God our Savior.

11 For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people,12 training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age, 13 waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ,14 who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works.

15 Declare these things; exhort and rebuke with all authority. Let no one disregard you.

Be Ready for Every Good Work

Remind them to be submissive to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready for every good work, to speak evil of no one, to avoid quarreling, to be gentle, and to show perfect courtesy toward all people. For we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, led astray, slaves to various passions and pleasures, passing our days in malice and envy, hated by others and hating one another. But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior,so that being justified by his grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life. The saying is trustworthy, and I want you to insist on these things, so that those who have believed in God may be careful to devote themselves to good works. These things are excellent and profitable for people.But avoid foolish controversies, genealogies, dissensions, and quarrels about the law, for they are unprofitable and worthless. 10 As for a person who stirs up division, after warning him once and then twice, have nothing more to do with him, 11 knowing that such a person is warped and sinful; he is self-condemned.

Final Instructions and Greetings

12 When I send Artemas or Tychicus to you, do your best to come to me at Nicopolis, for I have decided to spend the winter there. 13 Do your best to speed Zenas the lawyer and Apollos on their way; see that they lack nothing.14 And let our people learn to devote themselves to good works, so as to help cases of urgent need, and not be unfruitful.

15 All who are with me send greetings to you. Greet those who love us in the faith.

Grace be with you all.

May the Grace and Peace of God be with you always,
In Christ Jesus,
Jorge

Friday Sermon | Grappling with the Text by Bryan Wolfmueller

WeTVLogo2Today, we are going to take a look at one teaching split into 2 Sessions on YouTube. The folks at Worldview Everlasting are expanding their YouTube offerings and one of the new segments is called Grappling, and it is presented by Pastor Bryan Wolfmueller. He has his own blog site in which he gives the following self description:

Pastor Bryan Wolfmueller: husband, father of four, pastor of Hope in Aurora, CO, co-host of Table Talk Radio, fan of the distinction of law and Gospel.

I do enjoy the readings shared via blog and listening to Table Talk Radio as I find the time.

Grappling: The Fear of the Lord (Proverbs 1:1-7)

Proverbs 1:1-7 (ESV)| The Beginning of Knowledge

The proverbs of Solomon, son of David, king of Israel:

To know wisdom and instruction,
    to understand words of insight,
to receive instruction in wise dealing,
    in righteousness, justice, and equity;
to give prudence to the simple,
    knowledge and discretion to the youth—
Let the wise hear and increase in learning,
    and the one who understands obtain guidance,
to understand a proverb and a saying,
    the words of the wise and their riddles.

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge;
    fools despise wisdom and instruction.

Grappling: The Enticement of Sinners (Proverbs 1:8-19)

Proverbs 1:8-19 (ESV) | The Enticement of Sinners

Hear, my son, your father’s instruction,
    and forsake not your mother’s teaching,
for they are a graceful garland for your head
    and pendants for your neck.
10 My son, if sinners entice you,
    do not consent.
11 If they say, “Come with us, let us lie in wait for blood;
    let us ambush the innocent without reason;
12 like Sheol let us swallow them alive,
    and whole, like those who go down to the pit;
13 we shall find all precious goods,
    we shall fill our houses with plunder;
14 throw in your lot among us;
    we will all have one purse”—
15 my son, do not walk in the way with them;
    hold back your foot from their paths,
16 for their feet run to evil,
    and they make haste to shed blood.
17 For in vain is a net spread
    in the sight of any bird,
18 but these men lie in wait for their own blood;
    they set an ambush for their own lives.
19 Such are the ways of everyone who is greedy for unjust gain;
    it takes away the life of its possessors.

I pray you found these videos helpful and exciting. Please check out WeTV and let them know how much you enjoy this new content. I pray they continue with it.

Ephesians 3:14-19 (ESV) | Prayer for Spiritual Strength

14 For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, 15 from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named, 16 that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, 17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, 19 and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.

In Christ Jesus,

Friday Sermon | “Getting the Picture” by Alistair Begg

2011-alistair-beggToday, I’d like to share a timely sermon by Alistair Begg entitled “Getting the Picture” preached on 13 September, 2015 at Parkside Church.

Biblical prophecy can be confusing and difficult to understand. The apocalyptic images in Daniel 7 communicate truth in a way that is vivid and that can be understood by believers in every age and culture. In this message, Alistair Begg walks us through the terrors of Daniel’s vision to its conclusion: the promise of the Son’s unending dominion. We are reminded that God is the One who sets up and brings down authorities, and He is sovereignly in control of history.
